GRID Traveler: Distant Reality is the first in a three-part story of Sean Blakemore, Commander of the GRID Battlecruiser Reginald L Johnson, who wallowed in self-loathing. He drank too much, suffered from depression, and swam in self-pity. He figured life could not suck any worse when he received new orders. He had to hand the Johnson over to another commanding officer. God hated him he thought.

Principal Characters

Sean Blakemore: In his mid-40s, Sean has been deemed as the most successful commander in the GRID fleet. He is admired by most of his crew and is very loyal in return. He’s fairly tall, light brown skin with a mixed racial heritage. His DNA is Necronian enough to activate rooms and Necronian machinery.
Kathy Loggar: Kathy, mid-40s, is an average looking woman with deep Indian ancestry. She holds several Ph.Ds. in various disciplines and is the leader of The Most High Goddess. The Most High is a semi-secret wiccan based organization that has vast control over many aspects of GRID, Earth, and Colonial proper.
Robin Spaarin: Robin, in her late 30s, is the captain of the Webster. She is blond and fair skinned. She is the main reason Sean is not a Captain. She is also a follower of The Most High.
Tony Randals: Tony is Dr. Loggar’s assistant on the planet Necron. He is secretly in love with her, but knows she is dedicated to her work, which currently is unlocking the secrets to the planet Necron.
Necron: This is the planet were Dr. Loggar believes Magick started. The Necronians call it En’ol’aert. Loggar with a team of scientist discovered ancient writings, mostly in Latin, that talk about a massive planet wide exodus. They also discover that Necronians visited Earth thousands of years ago, thus starting the myths and legends of magick and wiccan rituals.
Agegi: Agegi was transformed into a living statue hundreds of years ago for crimes against the people. He has been watching the progress of the humans uncover the surface workings of Necronian society, language, and technology. He also realizes, in his ‘frozen’ state, that the humans want to release him from his bonds for some silly notion of learning and worshipping him
Adruqu: Adruqu, who looks to be in her 30s, is over 100,000 years old and is the ancestor to Sean. She has been waiting for Sean to discover the hidden chamber and release her from slumber. She will teach Sean and the others “magick” to fight Agegi and his minions in an epic showdown.
Milkens: Herb’s best friend is a technological introverted genius. He discovers the means of activating the different Necronian technology by faking Sean’s DNA.
Herb: The “leader” of the Milken/Herb duo. He’s verbose, hates Randall, and is highly intelligent. He wears his jumpsuit one size too small.
Reginald L. Johnson: The GRID Battlecruiser Reginal L. Johnson is a semi-aware driven craft. It is a 173-year-old vessel. During the SI wars, most of the RJL class ships were compromised. As a result, the AI feature of the Johnson has been toggled off. Only during extreme no-win scenarios or when the crew is tranquilized during long jumps is the Johnson’s AI awareness toggled on.
Kirkland: Kirkland is the Johnson’s Chief Communication’s Officer. He is also the ships pool overseer. If there is anything to place a bet on Kirkland is the one to see.
Cookie: The ship’s Enlisted personnel cook. He oversees the NCO and Enlisted Mess facilities. Cookie is also the ship’s informal psychiatrist. Sean frequents “Starboard’s Bow” with the pretense to mingle with Crew. The real excuse is that Sean thinks the Officer’s Head cook sucks. He much prefers Cookie’s food.

Acts

ACT 3: Robin freezes Tony while Adruqu suspends Agegi. In the end, Sean and his crew can leave. Agegi is left frozen with Tony and others in the main chamber. Sean leaves a note at their feet warning the Necronians that Humans are here now and to worry.
ACT 1: Sean learns that the person who created his pariah status within GRID Command will command the Johnson on a special mission. The head scientist in charge, who turns out to be The Most High Goddess, seduces Sean and convinces him to join the organization.
ACT 2: Once on the planet, Loggar and the others discover that Sean is indeed a Necronian descendant. His presence in many rooms spontaneously awakens the electronics. Loggar instructs him in the ways of The Most High and they go through a ritual that “awakens” Agegi”.
ACT 3: When Agegi awakens with a haunting laugh he announces he is an Ancient one and not an Elder. Loggar realizes her mistake. Agegi is the bad one. After a brief chase which ends in Adruqu, an Elder, awakening, who teaches Sean and his group magick the epic battle ends with Robin saving the day.

Synopsis

Staring in the mirror, Sean screams at himself. He is full of self-hate and contemplates walking into an airlock. The computer signals that he has a call from the admiral. Begrudgingly, Sean accepts the incoming message. He is happy at first, but discovers the new mission is not without some pitfalls. A past lover and cause to his pariah status he accepts.

Once onboard, Captain Robin Spaarin tells Sean that the Johnson and crew will take Dr. Loggar to a distant planet that may hold the secrets to Magick. Sean, not a believer in alien life, eventually shrugs and goes along with the mission. He meets with Kathy Loggar and over the course of several days becomes emotionally involved. Loggar, knowing that Sean is emotionally vulnerable takes advantage and convinces Sean to join The Most High Goddess. Sean agrees and Loggar works at teaching him the basics and preparing him for the ritual that will hopefully “awaken” Agegi, an unknown Ancient one. While enroute to Necron, Loggar discovers The Most High is partly the reason Sean was never promoted to captain. During a patrol mission and before Sean commanded the Johnson, he and Robin served onboard a battleship on patrol mission. The Admiral ordered Robin to fire missiles into an asteroid field. She hesitated. The order came during shift change., so the duty fell upon Sean to execute it. It refused, because he knew the area was occupied by the Admiral’s opposition family. The Admiral insisted it was the enemy. Later, Sean and Robin faced court-martial. Because Robin belonged to The Most High she received no punishment, however, Sean was also cleared, but the courts felt someone had to be punished for disobeying orders, thus Sean was given command of a battlecruiser, but not promoted. He remained a commander throughout the war. Loggar sent a special request to GRID Command through Kirkland.

On the planet, Necron, Tony Randall oversees the continued efforts of the many scientists and engineers excavating a new sight. The news is that they believe they found Marduk’s chamber – the supposed leader of all Necron and the most powerful of magick users.

Agegi, an Ancient one, stands in a chamber frozen as a living statue – his punishment for treason against the people. He watches through the still functioning Necron computer network the humans decipher the planet’s secrets. Through the years, he is delighted at what and how they make progress and he learns they plan on awakening him.

Sean is a true descendant. Robin is also a descendant but she doesn’t have enough of the Necron DNA to activate any of the machinery. Sean, at first, was thrilled to walk into a room and watch all the lights and ancient computer equipment light up. After the 50th time it became jarring.

Herb and Milkens create a means to fool the Necronian system by using a device that ionizes Sean DNA laden fluid into the area. Sean becomes jealous as he realizes he would no longer be needed, however, Loggar assures him he is needed and she is forever in love with him. They make plans to awaken Agegi.

During the awaken ritual, Agegi, appalled at first, as he is still able to observe things – a part of his punishment, accepts the gesture and rejoices in the realization that Sean has enough Necronian DNA to re-animate his statue like stasis.
The group watches as the chamber heats up and softens Agegi’s body. After several moments Agegi takes his first breathe in hundreds of years. The breathing is loud and echoes though out the chamber. Agegi laughs hauntingly.

“Alive”, Agegi announces he is an Ancient one. One person, unknowing to the others, dies of a heart attack. Loggar realizes her mistake. Agegi offers power and immortality to any and all who follow him. Tony is the first to accept and Agegi injects Necronian nanytes into his body.

As proof that Tony is now immortal he walks through a powerful forcefield setup earlier without lasting harm.
Sean, Robin, Loggar, and some others run for their lives. Eventually, they reach a dead-end with huge doors. Sean touches one and it unlocks revealing an enormous chamber filled with casket like objects. A bright column of light is in the distance.

Sean touches one of the chambers and sees a young beautiful woman. He is strangely drawn to her. She is Adruqu, his Necronian ancestors. She awakens and explains to a, at first startled, group what is happening and who Agegi is. She also gives each person Necronian nanytes via a passionate kiss. Robin holds off at first but eventually accepts.

Everyone, except Robin, is able to perform “magick” using Necronian nanytes. Adruqu shows them how to defend and attack. After a moment, she says they must fight. Herb has a near break down. Adruqu says it is unavoidable and the great doors open. Robin stays in the background.

Agegi, Tony, and the other converted minions attack. After a while everyone is defeated. Tony and two others approach Robin. He insults her and calls her weak and unless. Robin enraged lashes out, her nanytes awakened and turns Tony and the other two into statues.

After the adventure, Sean, Robin, and the command staff are eating dinner in the “Captain’s” ready room. Earlier, Sean received new orders. He was promoted to Captain retroactively, which placed him a few months senior to Robin. As desert was served, Sean hands Robin a copy of the orders. She reads it and realizes Sean is her Superior officer. Sean smiles and tells her to get off his ship, he was in charge now. Just then there is an announcement that Robin’s transportation back to the Webster has arrived and is ready to take her back.
