Breakin’ A New Trail
Matt blinked, then turned his head away from the light. He attempted to go back to the quiet cocoon, but the banging of a tin pan snatched him into complete awareness. A moment more and it occurred to him he was resting on a real bed with flannel sheets and goose down pillows. A breeze stirred his hair, so he turned to see an open window. Curtains with a rose pattern lifted in the air. Voices drifted to him, talk of fences and stock, chores to be done.
He moved, becoming aware of bandages swathing his chest and tying his left arm down. He experimented, moving parts of his body until he was sure all of him was there. He tried to remember how he got to this place, however fell asleep during the effort.
Matt’s eyes opened again just as Sarah stepped through the bedroom door. Her face lit with joy at the sight of him?
“Matt, you’re awake!”
He watched in amazement as the girl with copper hair crossed the room and planted a long kiss on his lips. She smelled like magnolia blossoms. Surely this was a dream.
Please, please let him stay here.
Sarah laid her beautiful head very gently on his good shoulder.
Matt realized he was delirious and didn’t care at all. He inhaled deep as he could without pain to hold her essence inside.
“Sarah? Are you, is this real?” It’s a wonder she heard the broken whisper, his throat was bone dry from fever and weakness.
“Oh yes, Matt. It’s real.”
“Where?”
“Home, Matt,” she raised her head and gazed into his tired eyes. “We are home, understand?”
He sighed, content to let his eyes feast on her face for the moment. He would rest again and she would still be there.
“Yes,” she whispered as if answering his unspoken thought. He didn’t mind dreaming Sarah kissed him, even if his lips were cracked and sore.
Sarah listened to his heart’s steady beat soothe her to sleep.
