Chapter 21

Honute lay on the couch in Theoris’ office. Ayruyi had been locked outside. She was miffed, but when Honute told her to explore the University and be back in an hour she didn’t protest too much. When he handed her a 100 Durham it disappeared and a smile appeared, seconds later she disappeared.
Theoris had dimmed the lights and asked Akila to hypnotized Honute.
Akila sat in a chair next to Honute. “Honute, please focus your eyes on the spot on the ceiling. Do you see it?”
Honute nodded.
“Take a deep breath, hold it, let it out. Do it again. You feel a tingly sensation on the top of your head. It feels relaxing and the sensation is getting stronger. Tell me what it feels like.”
Honute felt the sensation on the top of his head. At first it felt like an itch and he so wanted to scratch it, then it turn pleasant. “It feels nice. Relaxing -”
“I want you to enjoy it spreading down to your face, the back of your head and neck. You’re starting to drift off. You are feeling very relaxed.”
Honute listened to Akila and let her guide him to the land of sleep. On one level he was aware of everything in the room. He could sense that Theoris was off to the right, just behind Akila. He could smell Akila’s scent of lilac and honey. Even Theoris’ scent came through. It was the smell of glycerin soap, unscented, then he smelled a hint of honeydew and rose. A combination Hypatia enjoyed. On the other level he knew he was saying things that didn’t make sense. It was a string of jumbled words with no meaning. Some would call it speaking in Tongues, he called it babbling.
Akila took Honute deep. It amazed her how quickly he went under. Usually it took several sessions to get a person that deep.
Theoris passed Akila a note. It said, “Ask him about the war.”
Akila swallowed dry. She took a deep breathe and said, “Honute, can you hear me?”
Honute nodded.
“I want you to lift you right arm up and hold there.”
He did.
“I want you to image that your arm is not your arm and you feel no sensation. Do you understand? Repeat what I asked you?”
Honute did. He understood perfectly.
Akila reached out and pinched him a nasty bruise.
He did not winch.
“Put you arm down.”
He did.
“I want you to float back to a time you were not a priest. Go back to when the war was with the Cursed Lands. Do you understand?”
Honute frowned, but nodded.
“I want you to tell me of a time during the war where you engaged the enemy.”
Honute was still for a moment.
Theoris watched in fascination. She scribbled on the pad of paper and passed Akila another note.
Akila read it and looked at her.
Theoris nodded.
Akila took another deep breathe and let it out slowly.
Honute said, “Shhhhh.”
And Akila nearly jumped.
Honute said, “The enemy is here and I see them. There are about twelve of them, coming up the hill. Shhhhh. Hold still. Maybe they might pass.”
The room was still and neither woman moved.
Honute frowned. “There, one of them. Curse him, he spotted us.” Then Honute yelled out, “Engage!”
Akila jumped. “Tell me what is happening.” Honute was breathing heavy. “They are running up the hill and coming at us. Some of my men are hit. I shoot one, a dozen times but he is still coming. They must be hyped on STIM. I pull out some grenades and I toss them. Bodies and pieces of bodies are everywhere. That stopped them, but something is wrong. No, this is not right.” Honute started to become agitated.
Akila said, “Honute, relax. Listen to my voice. Do you hear me?”
After a tense moment Honute nodded.
Akila said, “What is wrong. Tell me, but you will remain calm. Do you understand?”
Honute nodded. “This did not happen.”
Akila looked at Theoris.
Theoris scribbled a note and gave it Akila.
Akila read it. “Honute, listen to my voice. When you hear my voice it will relax you. You will not fear anything. Do you understand me?” Honute nodded. “I will not fear anything.”
“Look at the plants. Are they real?”
Honute hesitated. “They are plants.”
Akila pressed forward. “Are they real?”
Honute paused. His forehead wrinkled heavily.
Akila pressed forward again. “Are they real, Honute? I need you to tell me if the plants are real.”
For a long moment Honute was silent.
Akila was about to say something when Theoris rested her hand on Akila’s shoulder.
Akila turned to look and Theoris placed a finger to her lips. Akila nodded, turned to look back at Honute, and waited.
After several minutes Honute spoke. “The plants are not real.”
Akila turned to Theoris.
Theoris wrote something out.
Akila took the note and stared at it. She swallowed hard. “Are the bodies real?”
Honute drew in a long breath. He slowly said, “Yes.” And then screamed.
Akila jumped.
Honute grabbed at the couch edge and dug his fingers in deep. The fabric ripped.
Akila said, “Listen to my voice, Honute.”
Honute stopped screaming.
“What happened? Tell me, what do you see?”
Honute relaxed and seemed to give in to whatever he had been fighting. “I see death. I killed.”
“With the grenades?”
Honute shook his head. “With my hands. All of them. I killed them all. Murdered them as they stood in front of me.”
Akila and Theoris were shocked.
Honute continued. “I tortured them like they did me. They will never touch a single thing again. I don’t want to be here.”
“Okay, Honute, come back to me.”
Honute relaxed again, smiled, and said, “Dr. Theoris has some of Hypatia on her.”
Theoris blushed deep red.
Honute said, “I smell Hypatia’s scent, it is nice. Theoris should wear more of it.”
Theoris quickly scribbled on the pad and handed the whole thing to Akila.
Akila looked back and Theoris nodded. “Honute, listen to my voice. Tell my how you feel about Hypatia.”
Honute went silent for a few seconds. “That bitch. The selfish prissy bitch is always nagging. Thoth how I want to shut her up sometimes, but I can’t.”
“Why is that?”
“I am no longer a warrior. I am a simple humble priest who wants to help people. I have to help people because it will make me feel better.”
Theoris’ eyes widened. She took the pad from Akila and scribbled. She gave the pad back.
It read, “What will make you sad?”
“Honute frowned deeply, “Killing people.” He started to cry. “I don’t want to see people die. It hurts and I feel bad.”
Theoris leaned forward and whispered in Akila’s ear.
Akila said, “Honute, listen to my voice. You will remember the plants to be real. You will remember that you had a wonderful nap and you heard non-sense words. Do you understand me?”
Honute nodded. “I understand. The plants are real. Theoris really should wear more of the perfume. I think it smells better on her. I had a wonderful nap and I heard non-sense words.”
Akila leaned forward. “Honute, wake up.” She reached out and shook his shoulder.
Honute opened his eyes and stretched. He yawned loudly and arched his back. “Did it work? What is that wonderful scent?” He sniffed the air and smiled. “Did I do anything silly?”
Akila and Theoris forced a smile.
Theoris said, “Honute, you and Akila did well. You have helped a lot.”
Honute beamed and stretched. He liked helping people. It made him feel better. “I am glad.” He smiled was deep and wide. He did feel good.
