Chapter 11

Honute rested on the bed. On one side of him was an EKG machine and on the other side was an EEG machine. He had wires draped across his legs, lap, arms, and chest. Both machines beeped every other second. “I’m supposed to relax, right?”
Akila stood over the EKG machine. Honute’s heart pattern readout on a small CRT in the standard Rhythm II wave – PQRST. She tapped at several buttons on the machine’s small keypad. The readout displayed his Rhythm II wave. She tapped out a few more commands and the screen displayed recording. “Yes, you’re supposed to relax.” She walked over to the EEG machine and repeated the process of viewing a few patterns and then set the machine to record mode. “I’ll be back in sixty minutes. Think some good thoughts.” She brushed her hand across his shoulder.
Honute inhaled and exhaled deeply. He counted from one hundred to zero, but got sidetracked numerous times. He had to restart three times and for some reason he could not get passed the number sixty-nine. Then he decided to think about Akila. She was wearing a tan colored wrap today. The material wasn’t as sheer as her white cotton one, but it hugged her body in the usual and important places. He started to get a hard-on and blushed. He wondered what type of readings the machines were getting. He thought about his duties back at the temple and wondered who was filling in for him. Priest Anguliko was good and motivated, but he doubted Head Priest Guriamon would pull him from his missionary duties. Priest Yurikaki could do his job, but he was new. Honute closed his eyes and he saw Akila’s face shining at him. He snapped his eyes open and saw Akila looking at him.
“Honute, you’re supposed to be relaxing. Now relax, okay?”
Honute nodded and closed his eyes again. He imagined Akila in his arms and the two of them sitting on the beach looking out at the descending sun. He liked this dream. He imagined the softness of her skin against his and traced his imaginary finger down the length of her imaginary leg. He snapped his eyes opened and tried to relax again. He watched Akila walk away with a smile on her face. Akila walked away blushing. She noticed Honute had a rather large bulge between his legs. She doubted that whatever he was thinking was relaxing him. Quite the opposite really. She smiled to herself as she walked back into the main computer room. Secretly, she hoped that she was the reason for the bulge.

Hypatia sat at her desk looking at Theoris. Both women finished eating lunch. Theoris walked in holding a bag of take-out from one of the local vendors. She liked the one that was just outside the entrance way to the University. The roadside kitchen was almost always crowded and that’s what made it appealing. She walked up and ordered a dozen mutton and lamb kebabs. She also made sure that several large slices of flatbread and a skinned onion cut in two were included.
Theoris gathered up the empty wrappers and used napkins and placed everything in the trash basket. She handed Hypatia a stick of breath saving gum. “How’d you like the lunch?” She asked.
Hypatia placed the stick of gum in her mouth and chewed. “It was very good. Almost as good as . . . .” She paused for a second. “It was very good. I’ve never eaten there before.”
Theoris nodded. “It’s one of my favorites.”
Both women stared at one another. Seconds ticked by and the silence seemed almost unbearably.
Theoris said, “Hypatia, I should never assume anything, but do you still love Honute?”
Hypatia frowned and turned away. “I do love him, but I’m not in love with him, and I don’t plan on changing my mind about the divorce.” She turned back. “That is what you are asking? Will I change my mind and go back to him after we begin a relationship, which I’m assuming you want.”
Theoris thought for a moment. She nodded. “Yes, I would like to pursue a possible relationship with you.”
Hypatia said, “Pursue a possible relationship?”
“Yes, are we compatible enough to eventually get passed the physical attraction?”
Hypatia thought Theoris a pretty woman for her age, but not a beautiful woman. Sex was good, but not perfectly great. Hypatia enjoyed the feeling of a real penis sliding back and forth between her legs, not plastic or even simulated flesh. The real thing was just that – the real thing. Hypatia considered Theoris’ personality. She liked the way Theoris carried herself with confidence and self-assuredness. And that she was very influential – which was a very powerful aphrodisiac, but she wanted that in a man. Then there was Theoris’ sometimes abusive and intimidating side. If she were a male it would have been called ‘competitive, go-getting, assertive and commanding’ but for a female it was simply called ‘being a bitch!’ “We did do this rather sudden.”
“I’d like you to spend the night again. I could have some food delivered. Maybe rent several RAVs.”
Hypatia nodded slowly and smiled. She really didn’t have a place to go nor did she have a good reason to decline the invitation. It seemed prudent to follow through with the situation. “I’d like that.” She said simply.
A great weight seemed to lift off Theoris’ shoulders. She really hadn’t considered what she would have done if Hypatia rejected her offer. Her last lover was a male intern. He was six feet five inches and a part-time dancer. She had him for two years and loved ever single day. Though he was moderately ambitious he couldn’t handle to riggers of multi-disciplinary science. In the end he decided to get the Master’s degree and become a full-time dancer. To this day he sends her a birthday and Christmas card and invites her to all his performances when he is in or near New Heliopolis. Theoris got up and walked over to Hypatia. She reached into her skirt pocket and pulled out a key. “It’s to the front door. Here.”
Hypatia took the key and held it.
Theoris leaned down and kissed Hypatia on the forehead. She turned and walked out the office and headed back across the street.
Hypatia looked at the key and wondered how much accepting it was going to cost her. She turned her chair around to face the window and watched Theoris walk into the building across the street. She looked at the key again and likened it to the keys of the underworld. A door twice locked is never once opened.
